Congratulations to CC&E's Class of Spring 2025

May 15, 2025

CC&E honors all the new coastal scientists, oceanographers and environmental scientists receiving their degrees today!

"Congratulations graduates! Your remarkable achievements fill me with tremendous hope for our future. Whether your career takes you across the globe or down the road to our beloved Louisiana coast, know that we are deeply proud of you. The work you've prepared for is not just your passion鈥攊t's vital to our world," said CC&E Dean Clint Willson.

This semester's graduating class includes four students receiving their doctorates, eleven who have earned their Master's degree, and 21 graduating with a Bachelor's in Science.

PhD candidates included three from the Department of Oceangraphy & Coastal Sciences, or DOCS, and one from the Department of Environmental Sciences, or DES. Prakash Dangal, the DES candidate, studied persistent free radicals under the advising of Professor Slawomir Lomnicki. Dangal recalled fondly his time at CC&E: "Some of my most memorable experiences at 海角社区 include the 2019 college football championship, the incredibly supportive seniors in our lab, and the insightful weekly CEGO seminars."

Le Zhang, who is receiving her PhD from DOCS, worked in coastal modeling under Professor Z. George Xue. She has accepted an offer to be an Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's Horn Point Lab. She explained her research this way: "Modeling is the extra pair of eyes that allow us to see the future, understand the mechanisms beneath the surface, and view broader scope and across scenarios."

Masters students included a mix of thesis and professional degrees. Research topics ranged from detection of large-scale fire events to marsh grass responses to salinty. Hank Dolce studied the Saharan Air Layer under DOCS Associate Professor Paul Miller. CC&E's social activities were among some of his favorite experiences while here, including the Christmas party and the crawfish boil put on by the graduate student organization.

The undergraduate class boasts four students who are also graduating from the Ogden Honors College and three students graduating Summa Cum Laude. Their list of accolades doesn't stop there - the class also contains four Distinguished Undergraduate Researchers, two Distinguished Communicators, one 海角社区 Engaged Citizen medal recipient, and two new Phi Beta Kappa inductees.

To all of our newest alumni, CC&E is so proud of you! We can't wait to see what you do next!
