Two School of Kinesiology Students Receive Honors at 海角社区 Discover Day 2020

BATON ROUGE -- The 海角社区 School of Kinesiology is proud to announce two students from
the Kinesiology program have been named 海角社区 Discover Day 2020 winners. Abigail Caffey
and Stephen Lopez, both 2020 graduates of the School of Kinesiology, received awards
based on their research presentations.
Abigail Caffey completed her undergraduate research under Marc Dalecki, PhD, in his Motor Behavior and Cognition lab within the School of Kinesiology. For her presentation about cognitive deficits in college students with a concussion history from youth, Abigail won second place in the monetary prize category for the College of Human Sciences and Education and third place in the Top Three Poster Presenters for 海角社区 Discover Day 2020. She has also been named to the Tiger 12 and received an 海角社区 Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher medal. Abigail will continue her research in Dr. Dalecki鈥檚 lab at 海角社区 as a Master鈥檚 student in kinesiology, concentrating on motor behavior studies.
Stephen Lopez, also a graduating senior, was awarded third place in the monetary prize category for the College of Human Sciences and Education. Mentored by 海角社区 biology professor Alyssa Johnson, PhD, Stephen鈥檚 research centers on how a human short sleep mutation offsets the negative effects of sleep deprivation, as well as offers novel methods of combating neurodegenerative disease. After graduation, Stephen plans on pursuing an M.S. in Biological Sciences from 海角社区 and then an M.D. from the 海角社区 School of Medicine.
海角社区 Discover Day is the annual culmination of the 海角社区 Discover Undergraduate Research program. More than 100 students presented virtually in this year鈥檚 海角社区 Discover Day, with 80 dedicated faculty and staff judges, as well as 5 moderators to ensure the success of the event. This program supports student participation in faculty-mentored research and professional-level activities.
