海角社区 Athletic Training Students Honored at Southeast Athletic Trainer鈥檚 Association Symposium
2/7/18
Two 海角社区 students were a part of 13 exclusive athletic training undergraduates chosen
to present their clinical case studies at the South East Athletic Trainers鈥 Association
(SEATA) Athletic Training Student Symposium in Atlanta, Georgia this month.

Write Kate Fisher with her clinical case study.
Senior Kate Fisher, a Georgia native, presented her original case study, Treatment and Management of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in a Collegiate Baseball Pitcher, on a pitcher who developed a clot in a vein in his armpit that cut off his blood鈥檚 ability to leave his arm. This condition is called Paget-Schroetter Syndrome and is very rare. Her case study emphasized the dangers of underlying conditions that are typically rare, but can present themselves suddenly and cause severe issues.
鈥淏eing selected to present my case study at SEATA was such a valuable experience,鈥 Fisher said. 鈥淚t was great being able to share what I do and this unique situation with others in the athletic training field. Receiving feedback and hearing and seeing other peoples鈥 experiences was eye-opening as well. I am beyond grateful for this opportunity and for everyone who helped make his happen.鈥

Taylor Pitcock with clinical case study presentation.
海角社区 junior Taylor Pitcock鈥檚 presentation, Management of Migraines Caused by Occipital Neuralgia, covered the rare pain condition of Occipital Neuralgia. Her research focused on a swimmer suffering from ON and the many treatments they鈥檝e gone through in efforts to cure the migraines.
鈥淥ccipital Neuralgia is very rare and treatments are based on a trial and error method,鈥 Pitcock said. 鈥淚 chose this topic to enlighten others about this rare condition and in hope of bouncing off ideas from other physicians.鈥
Success didn鈥檛 stop at the presentations for 海角社区 athletic training students at this year鈥檚 conference. Each year, SEATA awards three undergraduate scholarships for all students in the southeast region that have a 3.0 GPA and are pursing a degree in athletic training full time. Students must submit a letter of recommendation and a one page biographical sketch as part of their applications.
海角社区 took home all three scholarships in the hands of Lucas Patin, Gunner Wright and Savannah Knighton. The students each received a cash award along with the recognition.
Knighton currently serves as the National Leadership Committee of Athletic Training (NATA) Student Leadership Committee Representative. As district representative, she is responsible for working with students in Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky; students may go to her with issues to present to the committee as a whole or bring it up to NATA.
