º£½ÇÉçÇø Kinesiology's Ochsner Wellness Center: Year in Review

BATON ROUGE, LA – Located in the recently renovated Huey P. Long Field House is the º£½ÇÉçÇø School of Kinesiology's Ochsner Wellness Center (OWC), a multi-faceted instructional space, resource for clinical research and hub for wellness promotion within the College of Human Sciences & Education. The OWC is finishing its first full year of operations with the 2024-25 academic year being both exciting and fruitful for the space.
More than 2,000 students participated in classes in the OWC. Classes included:
- Principles of Conditioning
- Test & Measurements in Kinesiology
- Team Activities
- Individual & Lifetime Activities
- Movement Fundamentals
- Methods of Teaching Wellness Education
- Aerobic & Strength Activities
- Weight Training
- Pop Dance
- Yoga
- Jogging
In addition, several full-time and adjunct faculty members used the OWC for special sessions to supplement their classroom teaching:
- Janene Grodesky, PhD - Health and the Aging Process (KIN 3605)
- Olga Khokhryakova, PhD Student - Sport in Society (KIN 2530)
- Molly Phillips, Instructor - Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities (KIN 2540)
In addition, several faculty members and instructors used the OWC for special sessions to supplement their classroom teaching.
CLASS USAGE
SPECIAL EVENTS
Keith Thompson, OWC Operations Manager, hosted a Sudden Cardiac Awareness event in October 2024
that attracted over 200 participants. Community partners included , Cardiac Solutions, and East Baton Rouge EMS.
Lisanne Meiners McCuller, PT, DPT, along with Justin Morris, PhD, organized an event that featured , an organization that aims to create a culture of health in rural schools so that
everyone has the opportunity to live a healthier life. EatMoveGrow's Heart Challenge
is sponsored by the Mikie Mahtook Foundation, allowing EatMoveGrow to offer the program
to rural schools in Louisiana. Mahtook is a member of the CHSE Dean’s Advisory Council.
On Fridays, Thompson led exercise sessions for students from the Integrative Community Studies Program (ICSP). ICSP is a residency-based program at º£½ÇÉçÇø for students with moderate disabilities.
It is led by Paul Mooney, PhD, and Leanora Hernandez in the Lutrill & Pearl Payne School of Education.
This February, Nick Fears, PhD, and Stephanie Sontag, PhD, began training athletes in Powerlifting. OWC and CHSE staff and faculty look forward to continuing
this partnership.
In March, faculty and staff hosted 14 young men from Urban Prep of Chicago, IL. The
evening was spent weight training and playing basketball.
Andrea Morris, PhD, (Dept. of World Languages, Literatures & Cultures) used the dance studio on a few occasions for her Latin Music and Dance Class (SPAN
3980).
The also used the dance studio for a dress rehearsal to prepare for a performance in
New Orleans.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
KINES RESEARCH
The WEALTH Study was conducted by Ryan Hulteen, PhD; Heather Allaway, PhD; and Jaclyn Hadfield, PhD. WEALTH is a workplace dance fitness intervention for º£½ÇÉçÇø female faculty and staff.
The goal of this project is to determine the feasibility of offering a lunchtime physical
activity class.
Partnerships are being formed with other outside organizations that will be using
the OWC for research data collection... more to come!
Several faculty & staff participated in the Morning Hour of Power in February.
Thompson is working with Chad Gothreaux, CHSE Assistant Dean for Advancement & Engagement Services, on a project to enhance the sound system, acoustics, and functionality of our dance studio.
The OWC continues to be a highlight when giving tours to visitors, perspective students, and potential donors.

the School of Information Studies, the School of Kinesiology, the School of Leadership
