Broussard and Fondren win American Journalism Historians Association awards; Coyle named to AJHA board

Manship鈥檚 Dr. Jinx Broussard and PhD student Elisabeth Fondren received awards at the American Journalism Historians Association (AJHA) annual convention in October. Dr. Erin Coyle was appointed to serve on the AJHA Board of Directors.
The AJHA convention was held in St. Petersburg, FL.
Fondren was awarded the Robert Lance Award for the Outstanding Doctoral Student Research Paper and the Wally Eberhard Award for the Outstanding Paper on Media and War. Her paper was titled 鈥淒isloyal or Merely Distrusted? Editorial and Political Views of the German-Language Press in 1917.鈥� Fondren鈥檚 research focus is in journalism history, public affairs theory and media philosophy.
Dr. Broussard was awarded the J. William Snorgrass Memorial Award for The Outstanding Paper on a Minorities Topic. The paper is titled 鈥溾�楲arger than Life鈥�: Celebrity Journalism, Gender and Black Politics in Fay M. Jackson鈥檚 Hollywood Adventures, 1933-1935.鈥� Dr. Broussard co-authored the paper with Dr. Cristina Mislan and Dr. Mislan鈥檚 graduate student, Rachel Grant, of the University of Missouri鈥檚 School of Journalism. Dr. Mislan obtained her Master鈥檚 in Mass Communication degree from the Manship School in 2009. Their paper focuses on Fay Jackson, a female African-American correspondent for the Associated Negro Press in the mid-1900鈥檚 who reported on African-American celebrities.
Dr. Broussard is soon beginning another project with Dr. Mislan on 20th century, African-American journalist William Worthy. The book discusses how William Worthy transformed modern correspondence as he attempted to change the status quo as a journalist.
Dr. Coyle will serve on the AJHA Board of Directors for a three year term, from 2016-2019.
