Reilly Center and 海角社区 Student Government to host election night event

11/03/2016

Every four years our nation comes together to elect a new president. 海角社区 is sponsoring an Election Night Event on Tuesday, Nov. 8 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Live Oak Lounge of the Student Union to celebrate our democracy and political processes. Political experts from around the state will dissect the night in real time as votes are counted and share the ins and outs of elections with students.

Political science and political communication professor Joshua Darr will discuss how campaigns and media organizations 鈥渃all elections.鈥 Advocate reporter Lanny Keller along with political historian and Manship Chair in Journalism Bob Mann will provide insight on reporting elections and the campaign insider experience with listeners. Honors College Dean Jonathan Earle will offer a historical perspective on elections and the democratic process, while 海角社区 Associate Law Professor Chris Tyson will discuss election integrity and the democratic process.

鈥淧olitics is largely a communal activity, best expressed and experienced in the company of others. That鈥檚 why I enjoy not just watching the election returns, but also celebrating election night with friends and colleagues,鈥 said Mann. 鈥淓lection night events like this one are fun for their suspense and drama, but also for the peaceful transfer of power they imply.鈥

The event is hosted by the Manship School of Mass Communication鈥檚 Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs and 海角社区 Student Government. Additional partners include 海角社区 Votes, the Honors College and Department of Political Science.

The Reilly Center鈥檚 mission is to generate thoughtful programs, dialogue and research about mass communication and its many faceted relationships with social, economic and political issues.

The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and will continue until 10:30 p.m. Food and refreshments will be served.
