Four 海角社区 Manship School of Mass Communication Students Awarded 海角社区 Campus Life's Tom W. Dutton Scholarship for Community Service

BATON ROUGE鈥擣our of the 12 recipients of 海角社区 Campus Life's 2020 Tom W. Dutton Scholarship are 海角社区 Manship School of Mass Communication students. The scholarship is presented annually to female undergraduate or graduate students for their outstanding service to the university community through participation and leadership in community service activities. Additional criteria include full-time status, a 3.0 GPA, and good academic and disciplinary standing with the university.

We proudly recognize the following Manship School students who received the 2020 Tom W. Dutton Scholarship:

 

"I am honored to be among the 12 outstanding women who received the Tom W. Dutton Award; serving 海角社区 and the greater Baton Rouge area has been one of the most important and rewarding experiences of my time at 海角社区. Over the past four years, I have particularly enjoyed serving the community through civil rights advocacy and by amplifying the voices of Black women to combat period poverty, sexual assault and violence, and working to strengthen community ties to 海角社区 in programs like Volunteers in Public Schools or Live 2 Serve Baton Rouge."

"My parents have worked extremely hard to support my brothers and I. Receiving this scholarship is a huge honor for me and a testament to the work ethic they instilled in us. I am grateful that other people believe in my capabilities and commitment to make a positive difference in the lives of others, which further motivates me to keep reaching towards my goals and dreams. I had the privilege to be part of Dance Marathon at 海角社区, which raises funds and awareness for patients at Our Lady of the Lake Children鈥檚 Hospital who otherwise can鈥檛 afford to pay their medical bills. It鈥檚 truly an organization that gives, and it was inspiring to meet some of the miracle kids whose families we were impacting through our time and donations."

"This scholarship is so generous, and I feel honored and humbled to be recognized for this award. I am very passionate about the work my sorority, Delta Gamma, does with students who are visually impaired. Every member takes time out of their week to help a student who is visually impaired get to and from class as well as help them run errands and simply live their lives. Some of these students would not be able to attend 海角社区 without our help because of long-standing policies, and I am so grateful to contribute to another 海角社区 student's success."

"This scholarship shines a light on the students who do exceptional service work while at 海角社区. It also means that I, as a student, can further encourage other students to engage and lead the community. I am most passionate about working with the community through annual campus events like MLK Day of Service and Geaux Big. Additionally, having the opportunity to work with non-profits in the community and organizations on campus in their service efforts adds to my passion for leadership and service."
