Field Trips

Participants in our Energy Fundamentals course will visit two campus facilities as part of their learning experience. These trips to the PERTT Lab and the º£½ÇÉçÇø Cogeneration Plant offer a chance to see energy systems in action. Both facilities are within easy reach of our main course location and showcase different aspects of energy production and research.

The PERTT Lab visit is scheduled for:

Session 1: June 24, 2025 (Tuesday) – 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Session 2: July 8, 2025 (Tuesday) – 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The º£½ÇÉçÇø Cogeneration Plant visit is scheduled for:

Session 1: June 26, 2025 (Thursday) – 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Session 2: July 10, 2025 (Thursday) – 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

º£½ÇÉçÇø PERTT Lab

PERTT Lab

The º£½ÇÉçÇø Petroleum Engineering Research, Training and Testing (PERTT) Lab is an industrial-scale facility, having full-scale equipment and instrumentation for conducting research related to petroleum technology.  The lab is on campus across Nicholson Drive from the course auditorium

PERTT Lab includes legacy oil and gas wells used for training and testing and will be the site of a new CO2 injection well to be drilled within the next year.  The facilities are used for all aspects of training in drilling operations, safety and blowout prevention, as well as industrial-scale testing of instrumentation and new technologies.

Visit the facility page here.

º£½ÇÉçÇø Cogeneration Facility

º£½ÇÉçÇø has a 20 MW cogeneration facility on campus walking distance from the course auditorium. Cogeneration (also known as Combined Heat and Power, or CHP) is the simultaneous production of heat and electrical power.

The º£½ÇÉçÇø system is composed of an aeroderivative gas turbine (GE LM-2000) connected to a generator and a HRSG (called Boiler 8) composed of an evaporator and economizer.  The power and steam produced are used for campus needs.

The tour includes examination of the gas turbine, steam turbines, boilers, heat exchangers, compressors, chillers, distribution systems and cooling towers.
