Credit Hours Awarded

A student completing a directed independent study (DIS) course will complete independent reading under the direction and guidance of the appropriate faculty DIS supervisor. The student and faculty DIS supervisor will meet together as needed, and agreed upon prior to the start of the DIS. The DIS deliverables may include, but are not limited to, written reports, projects, essays, bibliographies, etc. The deliverables will be submitted for evaluation by the faculty DIS supervisor. 

The number of credit hours awarded is based on the amount of required work for the DIS project based on the following:

• 45 Hours, 1 Credit
• 90 Hours, 2 Credits
• 135 Hours, 3 Credits

The Student Will

During the prior semester/term:

• Secure a faculty director of the study and discuss the proposed study with them. 
• Submit the DIS Proposal Form to the faculty director and the student's faculty advisor.

During the DIS:

• Submit the completed project one week prior to the final exam period.

The Faculty Director Will

• Determine the suitability of the proposed study and the number of credit hours to be allowed.
• Ensure that the completed DIS Proposal Form is submitted to the School Office.
• Ensure that the completed project is submitted to the School Office.

Research conducted by School of Information Studies personnel inherently reflects on the status and image of the School. Any research study done by faculty, staff or students of the School that involves gathering data through the use of questionnaires, interviews or other contact with individual respondents must have prior approval of the Director. The Director may consult with individual faculty members, the faculty as a whole, or other knowledgeable and involved persons in evaluating proposed research. Research projects must also meet the criteria and procedures set forth by the University for research involving human subjects.
