The Interdisciplinary Science Building provides a welcomed expansion for math and science learning and research at 海角社区. The College of Science has experienced a nearly 50 percent increase in enrollment, and nearly all undergraduates, more than 25,000 across the university, are required to take math and sciences courses during their time at 海角社区. The four-level, 148,000 square foot facility will serve as the university's center for STEM collaboration in research and education.
Geology major Sarah Bancroft is the inaugural recipient of the Dr. George C. Battalora Jr. Scholarship. She had the opportunity to meet Dr. Peggy Battalora, 海角社区 School of Medicine alumna and daughter of Dr. George C. Battalora Jr. The scholarship was inspired by Peggy's visit to the 海角社区 Geology Field Camp, which her father would have loved.
A $7.8 million estate gift from Dr. Charles M. Smith will advance cancer treatment through a longstanding partnership with 海角社区 and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center that begin in 1980. 海角社区 and the Cancer Center leverage their research expertise and clinical education through a joint medical and health physics program that applies physics to the use of technology in medicine and health care.
College of Science alum and New Orleans native Dr. Ronald Alvarez has made an indelible mark on the field of gynecologic oncology. Now, Dr. Alvarez is helping the college to support more creative and influential researchers through the establishment of the Dr. Ronald D. Alvarez and Denise D. Alvarez Professorship in Biological Sciences. This professorship will support salary supplements, enhancements and other scholarly activities related to research, instruction, equipment, materials, and graduate student support.
