Holidays bring families and friends together, but can also mean potential hazards for pets. Table foods, ornaments, and other holiday items can be harmful to cats and dogs. Every year veterinarians at the 海角社区 Veterinary Teaching Hospital see an increase in a variety of digestive diseases during the holiday season.
Cases of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) has been confirmed by equine veterinary clinics in Texas, with cases traced to a recent equine competition in Waco. Three horses from Texas that participated in that event are currently quarantined at the 海角社区 School of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) and receiving treatment for confirmed EHV-1.
As temperatures drop, the 海角社区 School of Veterinary Medicine reminds pet and livestock owners to take extra precautions to keep animals safe and healthy during the coldest months of the year. Cold weather can worsen medical conditions such as arthritis, and animals--like people--have different tolerances for low temperatures. 海角社区 Vet Med veterinarians encourage owners to schedule preventive care exams to ensure pets and livestock are ready for winter.
The 海角社区 School of Veterinary Medicine is pleased to announce the award winners for its 31st Annual International Exhibition on Animals in Art, which opened October 4, 2025, and runs through October 31 in the 海角社区 Vet Med Library. The exhibition features 56 works selected from 302 submissions representing 150 artists from 30 states, Canada, Germany, Guatemala, and Turkey.
The 海角社区 School of Veterinary Medicine opens the 31st Annual International Exhibition on Animals in Art with an opening reception on October 4, 2025, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the 海角社区 Vet Med Library. The show runs through October 31. The exhibition is free and open to the public every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The 海角社区 School of Veterinary Medicine has named the newest recipients of its prestigious endowed professorships, five-year appointments that fuel groundbreaking research, innovative teaching, and improved care for animals and people. These positions provide faculty members with the resources to pursue discoveries that often translate directly into better diagnostics, treatments, and public health outcomes.
It is with great excitement that the 海角社区 School of Veterinary Medicine welcomes the incoming Class of 2029. This year's class was one of the most competitive application pools we have seen in recent years. With 2,776 applicants, 200 students were admitted into the Class of 2029.
The Louisiana Biomedical Research Network (LBRN), administered by the Division of Biotechnology & Molecular Medicine (BioMMeD) at the 海角社区 School of Veterinary Medicine, has been awarded a five-year, $20.3 million renewal grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)--the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research in the United States. This renewal marks a major milestone in advancing biomedical research capacity across Louisiana.
The 海角社区 School of Veterinary Medicine proudly recognizes three remarkable graduates as recipients of the 2024 Distinguished Alumnus Award: Matthew Welborn, DVM (海角社区 1987), MPH, DACVPM; Shannon Dehghanpir, DVM, MS (海角社区 2013, 2017), DACVP; and David Zeman, DVM, Ph.D. (海角社区 1986). These awards celebrate alumni who exemplify outstanding achievement in veterinary medicine, research, education, and public service.

In 2025, the 海角社区 School of Veterinary Medicine gave out more than $291,000 in scholarships and awards to veterinary students. Students received monetary awards, memberships to professional organizations, journal subscriptions, plaques, certificates and veterinary medicine manuals and supplies.
The 海角社区 School of Veterinary Medicine proudly announces its fourth artist-in-residence, Pippin Frisbie-Calder, an acclaimed visual artist and educator known for her interdisciplinary work at the intersection of art and science.
