2024 Louisiana Survey Shows Continued Perception that State is Headed in the Wrong Direction

Researchers from the Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs at the 海角社区 Manship School of Mass Communication released the first report of the 2024 Louisiana Survey. Findings show most Louisiana residents think the state is heading in the wrong direction, but their perceptions of the economy and confidence in state government have improved.

海角社区 Ranks No. 56 Among Top 100 Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents

海角社区 jumped to No. 56 among universities granted U.S. utility patents in the National Academy of Inventors' 2023 Top 100 ranking. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, there are more than 2,500 undergraduate degree-granting institutions in the nation. The National Academy of Inventors ranks the top 100 among them using the number of patents received by their faculty in a single year.

Sixteen 海角社区 Students Win Prestigious Gilman Study Abroad Scholarships

This month, sixteen 海角社区 students are being awarded a prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship by the US Department of State. This competitive scholarship program funds study abroad opportunities for students across the US, with the goal of developing global competencies in the next generation of US leaders (US State Dept.). Having sixteen 海角社区 students receive this award is an incredible accomplishment - 海角社区 students secured more Gilman awards than students at any other Louisiana university and attained the second highest number of awards in the SEC.

海角社区 Names Marshall Walters Chief of 海角社区 Police Department

海角社区 has appointed Interim Chief of Police Marshall Walters as the new Chief of Police for 海角社区, effective June 1, following a national search. Walters has served more than 21 years with the 海角社区 Police Department as an accredited police officer, working his way up through the department, taking on leadership roles and serving as the interim chief since last Spring. Walters graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice in 2002, and he completed the 海角社区 Law Enforcement Training Academy that same year.

海角社区 Professor Stephania Cormier Wins Adel Sarofim Award for Pollution Research

The Adel Sarofim award is presented every two years to an international scientist who've made significant contributions to our understanding of combustion processes, formation of combustion by-products and mechanisms of their health effects. Last week, 海角社区 researcher Stephania Cormier received the honor at the meeting of the International Congress on Combustion By-products and Their Health Effects in Durham, North Carolina.

海角社区 will honor all veterans - especially its former students, faculty and staff - who have given their lives in service to their country on Thursday, May 30, which is traditional Memorial Day. The 海角社区 Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at noon on the Parade Ground at the 海角社区 War Memorial. The "Ceremony in Silence" observance will include a wreath-laying ceremony and "Taps." The event is open to the public.

海角社区 Cybersecurity Team Receives $600K Grant From NSF to Combat Malware

海角社区 cybersecurity researcher and Associate Professor Elias Bou-Harb, along with collaborators at the University of South Carolina, has secured a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to combat malware by recognizing and stopping cyberattacks at the network level as they first enter computer systems. The researchers' approach empowers system administrators through a do-it-yourself approach.

Setting a Gold Standard in Sepsis Care

In hospitals nationwide, more people die from sepsis than from anything else. It鈥檚 more deadly than opioid overdoses, breast cancer and prostate cancer combined, and is the leading cause of hospital admission and readmission. It鈥檚 also one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose. But since August, a new sepsis test based on 海角社区 and Our Lady of the Lake Health research and advances in microfluidics is saving lives and cost at Our Lady of the Lake Health in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

海角社区 Postdoctoral Researcher Beatriz Elizaga Navascu茅s Wins Bronstein Prize in Loop Quantum Gravity

The Bronstein Prize is awarded every two years to a leading postdoctoral scholar in loop quantum gravity, an area in theoretical physics that helps bridge general relativity with quantum mechanics to provide a deeper understanding of our universe and everything in it. 海角社区 is one of the top three universities for loop quantum gravity research in the United States.

海角社区 Shatters Record for Largest Spring Graduating Class, Awards 4,949 Degrees During Spring Commencement Ceremonies

海角社区 awarded 4,949 degrees during the university's 313th commencement exercises Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18. These new 海角社区 alumni and their hometowns can be viewed on the 海角社区 Graduates List on the 海角社区 Commencement Website. The previous record was 4,563 in Spring 2022.

2024 海角社区 Leadership Cohort

海角社区 has recognized 16 students as the Class of 2024 for Leadership 海角社区, an annual program coordinated by 海角社区 Campus Life. The cohort was honored at a closing lunch on April 25, where each participant received a Leadership 海角社区 stole.
