º£½ÇÉçÇø Names Marshall Walters Chief of º£½ÇÉçÇø Police Department
º£½ÇÉçÇø has appointed Interim Chief of Police Marshall Walters as the new Chief of Police for º£½ÇÉçÇø, effective June 1, following a national search. Walters has served more than 21 years with the º£½ÇÉçÇø Police Department as an accredited police officer, working his way up through the department, taking on leadership roles and serving as the interim chief since last Spring. Walters graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice in 2002, and he completed the º£½ÇÉçÇø Law Enforcement Training Academy that same year.

º£½ÇÉçÇø Professor Stephania Cormier Wins Adel Sarofim Award for Pollution Research
The Adel Sarofim award is presented every two years to an international scientist who've made significant contributions to our understanding of combustion processes, formation of combustion by-products and mechanisms of their health effects. Last week, º£½ÇÉçÇø researcher Stephania Cormier received the honor at the meeting of the International Congress on Combustion By-products and Their Health Effects in Durham, North Carolina.

º£½ÇÉçÇø Memorial Day Ceremony and Luncheon to be held May 30
º£½ÇÉçÇø will honor all veterans - especially its former students, faculty and staff - who have given their lives in service to their country on Thursday, May 30, which is traditional Memorial Day. The º£½ÇÉçÇø Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at noon on the Parade Ground at the º£½ÇÉçÇø War Memorial. The "Ceremony in Silence" observance will include a wreath-laying ceremony and "Taps." The event is open to the public.

º£½ÇÉçÇø Cybersecurity Team Receives $600K Grant From NSF to Combat Malware
º£½ÇÉçÇø cybersecurity researcher and Associate Professor Elias Bou-Harb, along with collaborators at the University of South Carolina, has secured a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to combat malware by recognizing and stopping cyberattacks at the network level as they first enter computer systems. The researchers' approach empowers system administrators through a do-it-yourself approach.

Setting a Gold Standard in Sepsis Care
In hospitals nationwide, more people die from sepsis than from anything else. It’s more deadly than opioid overdoses, breast cancer and prostate cancer combined, and is the leading cause of hospital admission and readmission. It’s also one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose. But since August, a new sepsis test based on º£½ÇÉçÇø and Our Lady of the Lake Health research and advances in microfluidics is saving lives and cost at Our Lady of the Lake Health in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

º£½ÇÉçÇø Postdoctoral Researcher Beatriz Elizaga Navascués Wins Bronstein Prize in Loop Quantum Gravity
The Bronstein Prize is awarded every two years to a leading postdoctoral scholar in loop quantum gravity, an area in theoretical physics that helps bridge general relativity with quantum mechanics to provide a deeper understanding of our universe and everything in it. º£½ÇÉçÇø is one of the top three universities for loop quantum gravity research in the United States.

º£½ÇÉçÇø Shatters Record for Largest Spring Graduating Class, Awards 4,949 Degrees During Spring Commencement Ceremonies
º£½ÇÉçÇø awarded 4,949 degrees during the university's 313th commencement exercises Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18. These new º£½ÇÉçÇø alumni and their hometowns can be viewed on the º£½ÇÉçÇø Graduates List on the º£½ÇÉçÇø Commencement Website. The previous record was 4,563 in Spring 2022.

2024 º£½ÇÉçÇø Leadership Cohort
º£½ÇÉçÇø has recognized 16 students as the Class of 2024 for Leadership º£½ÇÉçÇø, an annual program coordinated by º£½ÇÉçÇø Campus Life. The cohort was honored at a closing lunch on April 25, where each participant received a Leadership º£½ÇÉçÇø stole.

Nineteen ROTC Cadets Commissioned as Part of º£½ÇÉçÇø Spring Commencement Exercises
Nineteen º£½ÇÉçÇø graduates were recognized during º£½ÇÉçÇø's spring commissioning ceremony on Thursday, May 16, in The Student Union Theater. Maj. General Edmond M. Brown, Chief of Staff at the United States Army Futures Command in Austin, Texas. served as the keynote speaker for the ceremony.

º£½ÇÉçÇø Awards 26 Seniors the Engaged Citizen Medal
The Center for Community Engagement, Learning, and Leadership (CCELL), in conjunction with º£½ÇÉçÇø Campus Life, is pleased to announce that 26 seniors will graduate with the Engaged Citizen distinction for Spring 2024. Students were recognized and awarded medals in a ceremony on Tuesday, May 14 on the º£½ÇÉçÇø campus.

More than 4,800 students are expected to graduate during º£½ÇÉçÇø's 313th commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18.

º£½ÇÉçÇø Provost's Fund Invests $1.2 Million in Highly Competitive Research Teams
In a second round of Big Idea seed grants, the largest internal funding program in º£½ÇÉçÇø history, the Provost’s Fund for Innovation in Research is investing $1.2 million in 15 interdisciplinary research teams. Aligned with º£½ÇÉçÇøâ€™s Scholarship First Agenda, the teams and their projects aim to solve pressing problems in Louisiana and everywhere.

º£½ÇÉçÇø Names Clint Willson Dean of the College of the Coast & Environment
BATON ROUGE – º£½ÇÉçÇø has named Clint Willson dean of the College of the Coast & Environment, effective June 1. Willson has held the appointment on an interim basis since July 1, 2023, and has been selected to serve in the role permanently after competing in a national search. Willson holds the Mike N. Dooley, P.E. Professorship in Civil & Environmental Engineering.
