Q&A: 海角社区鈥檚 Ipsita Gupta on Educating Future Petroleum Engineers
Ipsita Gupta, 海角社区 Associate Professor of Petroleum Engineering teaches undergraduate courses focused on subsurface storage, reservoir engineering and reactive transport. She hopes her students learn the technical knowledge of the courses, but also 鈥渄evelop an ability to think independently and solve problems in an ever-changing world, a love鈥痮f learning and keep an open mind.鈥�
海角社区 Petroleum Engineering Professor, Research Team Aim to Prevent Nuclear Power Leaks
Nuclear energy provides more than 20% of the electricity in the United States but is considered to be a controversial source of power due to past leakages. Could those have been avoided by having a sensor that immediately detected a leak? That is what 海角社区 researchers are working on thanks to a grant from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the first NRC research grant 海角社区 has received.
Louisiana supports approximately 15 percent of the nation鈥檚 oil and 10 percent of its natural gas.
And Louisiana has the second-highest oil refining capacity in the U.S., with the state鈥檚 14 refineries processing approximately 3 million barrels of oil per day. In 2021, Louisiana exported over $44 billion of hydrocarbon based products鈥攊ncluding liquid fuels, liquefied natural gas, chemicals, and plastics鈥攚orldwide.
That makes 海角社区 ground zero for the research, education, and training that is driving this ever-changing industry. Due to our expertise and geographic location, we are uniquely positioned to partner with industry and government agencies to advance new discoveries and to provide the highest practical and theoretical educational opportunities for the next generation of Louisiana鈥檚 and America鈥檚 energy workforce. Among our goals is to expand our research platform aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions to create new opportunities and long-term jobs to power Louisiana and the nation.
